Clovers are a general term for the genus of trifoliums, “three leaf” which comprises of about 300 different species. Clovers was originally a symbol of rebirth for the Celts and the arrival of clovers symbolized the beginning of spring.

What is a four-leaf clover

The four-leaf clover is a rare variation of the common three-leaf clover. There is approximately 1 four-leaf clover for every 5000 ordinary clovers. According to tradition four leaf clovers bring good luck but why they do is not clearly stated.

Why are four-leaf clovers considered to bring good luck?

Some believe that it’s so hard to find a four-leaf clover that if you do find one you are really lucky.

When St. Patrick came to Ireland he used the three-leaf clover to explain the balance of unity and separation of the holy trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The fourth leaf on four-leaf clovers symbolizes Gods grace so if you have a four-leaf clover in your possession you will be blessed by God.

The Celtic druids considered ordinary clovers, or shamrocks, to be holy and used them frequently in all kinds of rituals. The four-leaf clover was even more sacred and the druids believed that carrying them gave you the ability to see demons and ward off evil spirits who would cause you harm and made you unlucky.

Carrying a four-leaf clover

In 18th-century Ireland, Irish Christians started wearing the shamrock, three-leaf clover, as a sign of pride and as a means to criticize English rule. Irish immigrants in America wore the shamrock to show that they belonged to the Irish community and to show solidarity with it. This eventually evolved into wearing green clothing.

Many of the Celtic legends about shamrocks and clovers revolve around women. During the Middle Ages shamrocks were believed to be a witch deterrant. Clovers where strewn in the path of a bride to symbolize her new life and to increase the chances of bearing a child.

The four leaf clover was also associated with Eve. She was said to have carried a sprig of four-leafed clover with her from the Garde of Eden as she left and thus anyone with four-leaf clover is believed to be carrying a bit of paradise with them.
